Bot flag request

Sorry for the last night's bot run to connect number/year pages between ko&ja. BTW, I want to continue this job between ja&ko wikipedia. Some pages (for example, 干支 & 甲子) only exist in asian wikipedias, and there is no interwiki link activity. I'm volunteering this job. Is there a process to get a bot flag for japanese wikipedia? If there, I'll follow it.

Botstatus KokoBot

Hi, Is it possible to give me the botstatus, so i can make changes to ja: (interwikis) but only invisible...?? If it is a problem, please tell me!!

Hi. Please rename my bot user:Yurik into user:YurikBot, and mark it as a bot so as to avoid flodding RC list in the future. The bot is only doing interwikies. Thanks!

P.S. This request has been placed on meta a long time ago, but has not been done, so i would like some local help.

Bot census

Hello all, now Japanese Wikipedians are drafting bot related document(s). For grasping the situation, we need how many bots are operated by whom. If you operate your own bot on Japanese Wikipedia, please list your bot account and your own at Wikipedia:Bots as "bots without bot flag". Thanks.

Bot flag request for Eskimbot

Hi,

I'm running an interwiki bot on the french Wikipedia, which, while browsing your wiki for new interwiki links can detect the missing ones. I'd like to have a bot flag to be able to correct/add new interwiki links. Could you say on this page if you are OK with it? Thanks.

I'll copy your request to Wikipedia:Bot. Though JA WP has no fixed set of rules for grant ingbot flag, normally a bot which is already known on the community has no opposition for bot flag. Personally I don't oppose to grant your bot the bot flag, I think however Eskimbot needs a bit more to be known there (one day activity isn't enough), so your patience will be appreciated. Further discussion will continue at Wikipedia:Bot and its talk. 'lut.
OK, thanks :).
Congrats, your request is approved. Good luck on meta.

JAWP is now ready to review bot flag requests

Some left me a message on my Chinese wiki page that Vina-iwbot added wrong interwiki on article 270,326,361,and other number article. These articles describes 数,not 年. It was not signed by a user so I don't know who to reply to. I have found the problem to be coming from the English wiki, where the link was pointed to the page for the number, rather than the year. This will cause a probelm with all interwiki bots (since if it does not find any conflict, it trusts what had been entered), as seen by the history on the page 270. I will be manually fixing the pages as I find them, and will look up in the database download to look for other year/number page mix ups. This will take me several days to find and fix. I will leave a note here once I'm done.

I went through all the pages under the Category:整数, and fixed the incorrect links. I also fixed the incorrect links from the English wiki, so it should not be a problem in the future. All pages about numbers on the english page are title "xxx (number)" when they exist.

Indef block of my bot User:タチコマ robot

Hi, this is being a bit frustrating and I'd like to bring the issue to community attention.

My bot User:タチコマ robot had been indefinitely blocked for reporting material presented on Special:Brokenredirects with speedy deletion tags. I am told on my talk page that broken redirects for userpages are an exception per Wikipedia:即時削除の方針 which of course I can't read.

I have no reason to doubt that such an exception exists in policy. I am merely pointing out that leaving such broken redirects is not a good practice. Such broken redirects clutters the special page. There are two possible solutions to the problem that comes to my mind.

  1. Creation of the non-existent page - even an empty page would fix the issue.
  2. Deletion of the broken redirect (common practice on all other wikimedia projects)

I do not believe my bot "broke down" as it did exactly what mediawiki (Special:Brokenredirects) directed it.

Hello White Cat. Which did you use "redirect.py" or original bot? Thanks.
I used "Redirect.py"'s broken redirect check function. The code worked flawlessly from a technical (code) perspective...
Hmmm... According to revision history of the pywikipediabot, function about putting speedydeleation tag was added at r5698 in July 2008.[1][2] I guess that the issue occurred after getting the later revision from repository and using with "broken" option of the bot. Is my conjecture right?
Probably. Until recently I didn't used the "broken" check as double redirects were taking all of my attention. Now with the built-in mediawiki bot I can divide my attention to other tasks such as this. However the incompatibility I mentioned above should be addressed at a policy level rather than at a programmatic level.
While this issue is addressed I do not intend to run this function. However the block interferes with my interwiki work (I am not going to edit my config files over this) and I would really like to see my bot get unblocked.
Thanks for your comment. I wanted to grasp the circumstances. And for requesting unblocking procedure later, I thought that it was necessary to clarify a immediate cause.
Now, I read talking between you and User:Kanjy. The reason for creation "broken reditects" by bureaucrat, is for keeping traceability. For example, the redirects will guide new user's page anyway at clicking an signature of old-username on talk page. But the pointing out[3] that the special page will be malfunction in the future is useful for community. I will submit this information (and your proposed solutions) to the Village pump... Ok?
Oh that's fine. I will not run the broken check thing in the meanwhile.
P.S. However, "I can't read (the policy)" is slightly ungood. We need to consider improvement scheme...
Many wikis including English wikipedia had a lot of outdated policies that were revised late. Its ok.

The bot account was unblocked. See WP:B/R.

Help needed - unified login

Greetings,

I am Mike Rosoft, an administrator on English Wikipedia. I have a number of accounts registered on various projects; today I attempted to create an unified login, only to discover that the account Mike Rosoft exists on Japanese Wikipedia.

Needless to say, I am not that user (I don't even speak Japanese); judging from those parts of his contributions I can understand (such as the English word "credit card" in his edit), I would hazard a guess that he is a spammer. (Note: he last edited about two years ago, and does not seem to be blocked at the moment.)

Is it possible to rename the user, so that my login works on all the projects? If not, could the Japanese administrators create the account MikeRosoft for me (which I could not create due to being too similar to "Mike Rosoft"?

P.S.: Please use en:User talk:Mike Rosoft or my e-mail address (displayed on my user page in an obfuscated form) to contact me.

The Mike Rosoft on Japanese Wikipedia is not a spammer, and he only wrote we should use credit cards to identify Wikipedians to reduce vandalism. I'm sure he is an English speaker as his Japanese is not good. Why don't you contact him on his talk page? You can never delete other Wikipedians' accounts.
Thanks for your response. I know that accounts can't be deleted on Wikipedia, but this is not what I referred to by "usurpation". (I have successfully requested usurpation of an account on Wikimedia Commons. Since the acount "Mike Rosoft" already existed with no edits, I created the account "MikeRosoft" instead. Later, when I learned of an option of usurping the account, I made the request and it was granted: the old account was renamed to "Mike Rosoft (usurped)", and mine to "Mike Rosoft". Generally, the policy is that an usurpation can only be performed when the old user has no edits and does not object to the usurpation [usually due to never starting to contribute to the project].) If usurpation is not an option here, could you please create the account "MikeRosoft" for me (and send me the password) instead? (I don't think contacting the user would have achieved anything; he doesn't have an e-mail address set, and hasn't contributed to this project for about two years.) Thank you.
Hello. People are making requests for usurpation at Wikipedia:Changing username. The guideline has not been set so it may take a while till your request get handled but I think there is a chance that your request be fulfilled. Good luck!

Usurpation request

Hi,

In order to complete SUL, I would like to rename my account to Malta. Could you please explain me (french or english) how to do that ?

Hi/Salut! The place of request is Wikipedia:利用者名変更依頼. However, as you probably know already, the account Malta is already used, though it seems this Malta has left JAWP long ago (Special:Contributions/Malta). To be honest, we have not got to the stage of making the guideline to handle this kind of situation, so you may have to wait for a while till you get the answer.

Impertinent question on username changes and usurpation

I know you have been very busy setting up the Usurpation methods, deciding on a Japanese translation and handling all the English username change requests due to the general introduction of SUL. But, do you have a rough idea of how long it will take to handle the ordinary (i.e. non-usurping) name change requests? It would be nice to have a rough estimate, so I know whether it makes sense to check my ja-watchlist so regularly in order to complete the SUL. Thanks for your efforts, 朝倉明 2008年6月5日 (木) 13:39 (UTC)

I think ordinary name changes have been handled when any bureaucrat find it necessary to take care of it, and usually they wait for more than a week. Last name change was done on May 25, and at that time the requests placed before May 12 were processed; the oldest one was placed on April 11. Occasionally there are cases processed immediately, too. We have six crats here but two of them are rather inactive now, and when others are busy, process tends to take time. For usurpation, Ks aka 98, one of the crats, has suggested earlier that he thinks we should in general wait for two weeks after notifying the current owner. Recently he mentioned that this may be shortened to one week, though personally he thinks two weeks may not be sufficient in certain cases.
Thank you for the quick answer (and for the changes on 利用者名変更依頼 for the page to be more user-friendly for non-Japanese speakers). So essentially, it can take the ビューロcrats anything from two to six weeks. I’ll just have to drop by from time to time.

As we have a Simple English Wikipedia, I wonder if there would be any interest in starting a Simple Japanese version. Learning the kanji is a big obstacle for many people learning Japanese. If it were written entirely in hiragana (or furigana), it could be a great resource for the beginner. Thoughts?

I'd agree with the "Simple Japanese Wikipedia" idea, but not without Kanji. Kanji is sometimes necessary, and sometimes one cannot do without them. Therefore I'd suggest just limiting the vocabulary to easy-to-understand expressions and quite frequent words, same as it is in English.
Would it be possible to somehow use furigana? Furigana really helps me a lot when I learn kanji, but I dont know is it possible to make it here on Wikipedia.

If you mean all kanji have to have furigana, supposedly it wouldn't be welcome here on Japanese Wikipedia, it is too clumsy for native speakers and painful to read in the current way like 日本語(にほんご). But some words have already furigana in this way and WP:MOS states all lemma should be accompanied with furigana.

Another possibility is a new feature for furigana (ruby) in a proper way - kana above the kanji. But currently this feature is not avaiable for all, only with some browsers and we need to have some devs hack to introduce such features to MediaWiki assumedly.

If you think another Japanese Wikipedia with furigana besides the current one, it would be attractive for learners perhaps, though I am not sure its feasibility. And perhaps it would be better to request on meta, m:Requests for new languages as another new project, unless there is a smart gimick for adding furigana automatically.

Using furigana on content published in the internet is really a non issue since there are now numerous tools to perform lookup and translations at the click of a button. There are both commercial products and free versions of such dictionaries (e.g. see http://rikaixul.mozdev.org/ ). I would recommend interested users to use such tools rather then ask for non Kanji texts or furigana annotated text. The goal of any student of Japanese (I'm one myself) should be to be able to read proper Japanese texts written with Kanji. While using furigana as a reading aid in printed texts makes perfect sense where Kanji lookup otherwise becomes a nuisance, in electronic texts furigana should be considered obsolete.

By the same logic, the simple English wikipedia is obsolete, because there exist online dictionaries. Huh?

The comment was about furigana. And Kana only texts. Such are obsolete. Simplified Japanese in terms of vocabulary, but still using natural writing style would of course be useful.

Initially I thought this sounded good, but on reconsideration I don't think this is really a feasible or necessary idea. Simple English has a history and accepted rules; "Simple Japanese" does not. Furthermore, since the biggest problem for non-native readers of Japanese is not grammar but rather vocabulary and kanji, and since Japanese Wikipedia is an online text, there is are simple solutions for people who are having difficulties: First, you could download and install JWPce, a small Japanese word processing program that comes with an excellent dictionary; when you encounter an unfamilar word or character, simply copy and paste into the dictionary and voila: instant definition/reading. The other option is to just use an online J->E->J dictionary, such as JDic; keep it open in a separate window while reading, and copy and paste. Hope this helps. How about a Hiragana only version of popular articles please!? 71.141.163.33

What would be the reason for doing that (maintaining two identical articles)? Or do you mean redirects? Perhaps a simplejapanese.wikipedia.org is in order? 65.241.152.139
If you are learning Japanese, try rikai (or better: rikaixul if you use the Firefox browser). At the moment, however, the best version of this Firefox plugin (even according to the original author himself) is rikaichan.
I noticed rikai would parse URLs that end with Japanese characters as text: not as URLs. A solution is to enter the URL directly: "http://www.rikai.com/perl/LangMediator.En.pl?mediate_uri=[insert URL here]" Echnin 2006年1月3日 (火) 23:54 (UTC)

My apologies if this discussion has already occurred, but have there been any plans on creating a simple Japanese Wikipedia, similar to the Simple English Wikipedia project located at http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page ?

As a native English speaker planning to take Japanese this Autumn, it would be very helpful. As well, a Kana-only Wikipedia would be an easier start into my Japanese education.74.250.127.214 2008年4月27日 (日) 10:14 (UTC)

There are earlier proposes archived in Wikipedia:Help for Non-Japanese Speakers/Archive/Misc#Proposal for simpler Japanese project. Frankly speaking, for grown-up Japanese-speakers, simply written and/or kana-only Wikipedia does not have much merit, and I cannot see the prospect of getting many contributers for such a project. In addition to the websites mentioned at the earlier discussions, you may also try websites that translate Kanji into Kana, such as http://www.hiragana-gateway.com/ (you can see the result here -> http://www.hiragana-gateway.com/hrgn/http://ja.wikipedia.org ). If the Japanese itself is too difficult, you may try websites for youngsters such as http://kids.goo.ne.jp/index.html?&SY=0&MD=2 .--Aotake 2008年5月29日 (木) 13:50 (UTC)

Double database entries

Hello, I am from the german WP and created a list of articles, that are saved multiple times in the database, saved on my user page SirJective. They lead to bogus entries in maintenance lists like the list of short pages. The wikitechnicians an working on ways to prevent the creation of such duplicates, but that does not remove the existing. Existing duplicates can be removed by sysops, simply by deleting and undeleting the entries.

See this text and meta:Multiple titles for some more information.

Dear SirJective;

Thank you for your notifying. I am not sysop, but someone will come to this page because you wrote this issue into village pump.

Thank you, Sketch, for the translation of my message. Should parts of Gombes answer be directed at me, then I'd like to get a translation. :)
As I can see, some of the duplicates have already been cleared. Please notify me, when it's time to update the list to see the success.

FYI. User:Carbuncle has already cleaned the listed articles. I'll continue to check it again.

OK, I see. Thank you, Carbuncle and Tietew.

I updated the list as a new page: 利用者:SirJective/Double entries. The database dump is from 2004年10月2日. ;-) You may want to compare it with the old list to see which articles have and which haven't been corrected since then.

The BBC's (英国放送協会) Go Digital radio programme have contacted me about doing an interview for them. They would also like to speak to someone outside of Europe or the US. The interview will be focusing on the fact Wikipedia has just reached one million articles, and will have a global slant since the World Service program goes out worldwide. The interview could be by phone, or, preferably, in a studio if someone who lives near a BBC studio could be found. They are particularly looking for someone who is able to talk about the use of Wikipedia in their country, not only the editing of it.

The exact date this will happen is not known, but they are phoning me tomorrow (24 September) hoping for a contact for the other part of the report.

If anyone would be interested in being interviewed for this, please contact me as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hi! This is Ronline from the Romanian Wikipedia. I would like to inform you that, at Meta-Wiki, there is a project running known as Translation of the week. This project seeks to translate an article into as many languages as possible every week, in order to strengthen collaboration between the different language projects and enable more article depth. The current translation of the week is Oradea, and it has already been translated into 17 languages. You can see more information here. It would be great if you could translate this article into the Japanese language, even partially would be great! Thank you very much, Ronline 2004年12月10日 (金) 12:02 (UTC)

Dear all, we have a problem here from Chinese wikipedia. There is one Japanese speaking users adding new articles in the Chinese version. These new articles, however, are all written in Japanese. Some of them was translated to Chinese bit-by-bit (possibly with the help of an online dictionary), but most others are not. I tried to help him/her in writing the article for 篠原涼子,and moved the article 鉄の靴下 from Chinese to Japanese. So far, these articles do not seem to have problems. However, in recent days, he added quite a lot of new articles, and these articles cannot be verified, and sometimes contains offensive contents. Some contents do not match with the articles in Japanese wikipedia. Therefore, I listed these articles here, and would like to request if any of you know about if these articles are authentic or fake. These articles are:

GNU Free Documentation License

You link to http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html. Why not link to http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.ja.html? I'm on the English Wikipedia, my username's Brianjd.

Hi Brianjd. I think that the why we link to English version is that FSF does not validate Japanese version (and any other ones) officially and legally. However, you can reach to Ja edition from the official version just with clicking the "Japanese" link. For more information, see the GNU's Unofficial Translations page. Cheers.
Firstly, the link that I proposed comes from the FSF itself. Secondly, that page also contains the original English version. I think that that Japanese Wikipedia should do what the English and German Wikipedias have already done - include the license, don't just link to it. There's no guarantee it'll be there in the future and it'll make it easier to distribute it (print part of it or put it on DVD) (I hope the English Wikipedia isn't the only one thinking about that!). Want a Japanese person's opinion regarding Japanese names in English Wiki

In English Wiki, there is a big debate about which convetion to use when listing Japanese people (Surname, forename or Forename, surname). What do Japanese contributors to Japanese Wiki consider is appropriate in English? While it would be culturally considerate to use the same convention as Japanese people do (Surname, forename) not many English speakers know about this rule. Thank you in advance.

Hello. I prefer "Surname, forename" style. In Japan, "Forename, surname" style has long been used to describe Japanese people's name in English, because most of European, and North American countries do so. But in recent 10 years, "Surname, forename" style is becoming common, though "Forename, surname" style is still more common.
Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japanese gorvernment administered a questionnaire about this.
  • Chinese and Korean people use "Forename, surname" style in English ,the style is used in their own language. Which style should we,Japanese use ?(source in Japanese)
    • "Surname, forename" style 34.9%
    • "Forename, surname" style 30.6%
    • I don't know. 29.6%
National Language Council(国語審議会) says "Surname, forename" style is appropriate, but the council is nonbinding. It is probably true that most people think "One should use the style which he/she prefers.".
In English Wikipedia, I prefer "Surname, forename" style, but don't mind which style is adopted. Where is the debate about this topic in English Wiki?--mochi 2005年1月14日 (金) 13:58 (UTC)
What about SURNAME, forename, where the surname is all caps? This way there will be no confusion as to which convention is being followed. If both names are capitalized normally, a visitor not familiar with Wikipedia might be confused as to which is the surname, but if the surname is all caps it should be obvious. -andrewsg
That seems like a good suggestion but a new visitor might not understand and change it to forename, surname. Brianjd
Even if that were to happen, I think we should choose the option that is most easily understandable for the reader. If we can write Japanese names in a way that eliminates the potential for confusion, it will be worth reverting mistaken corrections and educating new users. (As a sidenote, technical mailing lists like those for Debian use SURNAME, forename, as well as articles in many scholarly publications.) -andrewsg

Hi,

Wikinews currently exists in English, Swedish, French, Dutch, and Spanish. Since Japanese is the third largest Wikipedia language, and 12 Japanese users voted for it, I'm surprised nobody has expressed interest in setting up a Japanese Wikinews yet. For your information, if you would like to note your interest in doing so, you have to add your username to m:Wikinews/Start a new edition (a userpage on Meta needs to exist for the vote to be counted). Perhaps someone could translate this and post this information to the Japanese Village Pump?--Eloquence

Hi Eloquence, I translated your comments and announced on Wikipedia:井戸端 (告知). e-Goat/電気山羊 2005年2月6日 (日) 17:43 (UTC)

Wikimedia Collaboration

A new attempt to get the Wikimedia community to collaborate on multi-lingual tasks is the Wikimedia Collaboration of the Week. Please see the page on meta for details. It would be great if you could translate the following and promote it on the Japanese Wikipedia so the help pages in this language can be improved. The text below is from en:Template:Wm-cotw and will be updated every week. Thanks.

The Wikimedia Collaboration of the Week is an attempt to get the Wikimedia community to join forces in tackling problems that affect all our projects. The current COTW is to create a standard multilingual manual for the MediaWiki software. The help pages should be linked from Help:Contents on Meta, our Wikimedia-wide coordination wiki. Please see the instructions for this COTW and help to make it happen!

Spoken Articles

Is there any plan to make spoken articles soon (like on English Wikipedia)? I'm learning Japanese and would be really helped by the availability of spoken articles in Japanese Wikipedia.

I would appreciate some spoken articles as well, but if they are tob be done for the benefit of the language learner we would first need to simplifiy style. Most articles use rather elaborate wording and style, which is never used in spoken language. Proposal: I'm willing to pay for this. For my own and for the public benefit. This should be student work and I would price it accordingly, but as I'm not a student anymore I can afford to spend a few 10000 Yen to get a few articles voiced dubbed. Please contact me under (email removed to protect from spam) if you are interested. Writing to me in Japanese is OK.

The old one has more live information at the upper half of the page, the big news summary, the very beautiful photo shoots etc. Previous is compact with simple and neat layout. I want the old Main_Page layout back! I hope I could choose not to use the new one!

The contents of the current main page are almost the same of the old one, I think. But "recent news" isn't there. (I think you are dissatisfied mainly with it.) That has a reason. About 4 month ago, we decided to remove "recent news" from main page (the old one) by a vote (Template:最近の出来事/投票200612) because many people added inadequate news. In those days, the main page became old and some small probrems has appeared. So, we talked about that (Wikipedia‐ノート:メインページの改訂,Wikipedia:メインページの改訂/2007/新デザインへの意見・要望) and decided to make a new main page by a vote (Wikipedia:メインページの改訂/2007/改訂の是非を問う投票). I wish you'll accept this.--辞典の虫 2007年4月29日 (日) 07:44 (UTC)

IsbnCheckAndFormat

Hello all,

I hope to interest you in a little project. Until recently some Wikipedia-projects had a link to a ISBN-testing website on their Special:Booksources page. This was removed, because it contained Amazon-partner-links. I now have made a replacement for this tool, but without partner-links. It not only tests ISBNs for correctness, but also formats ISBNs with dashes in the right places and converts ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 and vice versa. It can be configured to use any OPAC you like. You can take a look at it with the following URLs:

I'd like to ask you for two things:

Yes, I understand that I am talking about a different Wikipedia, but this is really getting on my nerves.

Look at this article: fr:Jun'ichirō_Koizumi

Notice anything funny about the kanji? That is because the French Wikipedia switches the kanji to given name - family name - A practice never done. Sure, I'll talk about it on the French Wikipedia, but I have an issue with this because it will destroy the credibility of the French Wikipedia (and affect the credibility of other Wikipedias) if the problem is not resolved quickly.

Ok, thank you!

I sincerely apologize that I seem to have created a problem by trying to edit the pages related to ウクライナ正教会 (the Ukrainian Orthodox Church), and would be very grateful if a neutral party or parties would be willing to assist in reaching a solution.

I believe the two points we are unable to reach an agreement on are:

  • Order to list churches on the ウクライナ正教会 page.
  • Whether or not it is proper to identify the ウクライナ正教会 (モスクワ総主教庁系) as an autonomous church ("自治教会").

As the discussion has grown acrimonious, an independent opinion would be appreciated.

Dear Wikipedians:
Unless I am misunderstanding, I have basically been asked to leave the Japanese Wikipedia alone, and go work on another language. Anyone willing to brave the discussion at ノート:ウクライナ正教会 would be very welcome, especially any opinions as to whether this is really true:
"Your contribution to the Japanese Wikipedia is always welcome. Many users will be willing to correct your Japanese. If you are afraid that your non-native Japanese might be seen as vandalism, put 校正お願いします (correction is requested) as a comment in the Summary or in the talk page of your contribution. " m:A guide to the Japanese Wikipedia#Writing
I am sorry to keep coming back here, but is this kind of comment really acceptable on the Japanese Wiki?
Every single one of my changes or additions has been sourced to a primary or secondary reference, usually two or three. Qe2 2008年2月19日 (火) 17:24 (UTC) (Also, I honestly remember only ever placing TWO tags, one neutrality tag (which was removed by a third party, even though I feel the neutrality problem remains), and one "citation requested" tag (which Kliment.A.K. removed without citing any references).
And now this morning I find this private note waiting for me:
荒らし行為はやめてください。これ以上続ければ、ウィキペディアの編集ができなくなる投稿ブロックの対象となりますので、ご注意ください。 --Kliment A.K. 2008年2月19日 (火) 19:38 (UTC)
And at ウクライナ正教会・キエフ総主教庁 I find this "タグ濫用以前の状態に差し戻し:これ以上続けるのであればブロック申請を提出します" as the explanation for his removing the "citation requested" tag. And, no, he still has not provided a single citation.

I believe that I have exhausted every means to reach a solution with the other party. I beg anybody reading this to please simply let me know whether, and how, it would be possible to request dispute resolution in this matter.

...and now deletion of ウクライナ正教会・キエフ総主教庁 has been requested. [I misunderstood the notice. Sorry.] Will some kind Wiki Ambasador please at least let me know what to do?

No need for alarm! Firstly, the deletion requested is not a wholesome deletion of the article but only a deletion of specific revisions. (We interpret the GFDL fairly strictly here, so a copyright-infringing edit is not allowed to remain even in the history.) Nobody is trying to eliminate the articles in question from the JaWiki entirely, so no need for alarm. The article itself will remain even if the request passes. Additionally, I bet the deletion request will not pass. According to User:Mizusumashi, the edit in question has all the GFDL-wise-requirements needed when moving text.

Request for Block of Qe2 san has been suggested by Kliment san. The detail is here Wikipedia:投稿ブロック依頼/Qe2 --Peccafly 2008年2月22日 (金) 15:19 (UTC)

This is user QE2. I understand that as of today I have been permanently blocked from the Japanese Wikipedia. I will, of course, respect that block, but would be grateful if someone would please explain on what basis this decision was made.

New Wikipedist in Brazil

Olá, meu nome é Bruno Leonard. Deixo dois idiomas para quem entender.
Hello, my name is Bruno Leonard. I leave two languages for those who understand.
Espero a resposta.
I am a newcomer on Wikipedia-ja and wonders if there is any wikipedist addition to speaking English, believes in Portuguese. If possible, set a Japanese wikipedist believes/speaks that also in Portuguese, I start to the future project. Tranks to all. I hope the answer.

As detailed in a New York Times article, there is an error in the Japanese characters in the Wikipedia logo. I have tried creating a fixed version at Image:Wikipedia-logo_thue.png. Could you please say whether the fixed character is acceptable? See also meta:Errors in the Wikipedia logo. Regards, en:user:Thue 2008年5月27日 (火) 19:20 (UTC)

This "error" has been repeatedly pointed out . . . (e.g. en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Language/2007 January 27#wikipedia symbols.) If it can be "corrected", I guess that is better . . . I will post a comment at Wikipedia:井戸端 (Village pump) to ask what the contributers of JAWP think.
Why is the character "祖" in the logo consisted of koromo-hen(衤) instead of shimesu-hen(礻)? It seems another mistake.--Kasuga 2008年5月29日 (木) 15:33 (UTC)
I agree on that it's another mistake. I looked up Chinese dictionary for the character and confirmed that "祖" is the correct character for both Japanese and Chinese. (Chinese characters are used in both Japanese and Chinese as the Latin alphabet is used in both English and French.) The difference of two characters is: the left part of the character on the current logo is one needless line added to the correct character. Wrong:衤, Correct:礻, in 祖.--Autem 2008年5月30日 (金) 17:16 (UTC)
Uh... Sorry, I found the case what 祖 is composed of 衤[8]. It might be not a mistake.--Kasuga 2008年5月30日 (金) 20:51 (UTC)
Hi, Thue. Thank you for your post. Your fixed Japanese characters is not bad.
But they looks a little strange. We Japanese Wikipedians have discussions their font, shapes and how many characters we use - one Japanese character or two? We need more time for making a community decision. But, I think, our discussions are going to the goal. Please wait one or some weeks.
Sorry for my poor English. Thank you.--Mizusumashi 2008年6月18日 (水) 08:38 (UTC)
Now it seems we can't make a community decision soon. Maybe a vote will be held. Could you wait until we make a community decision? Do we have to hurry up to make that?

Hello Japanese Wikipedians, As a PhD student from Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, I plan to present a project related to Japanese and Chinese Wikipedia in the fourth global iSummit, to be held in Sapporo, Japan from 29 July to 1 August, 2008. I really like to meet some of the Japanese Wikipedians now via electronic communication or around that time face to face in Sapporo. My presentation will be how and why to initiate a co-written Sino-Japanese history textbooks by Japanese and Chinese Wikipedians. I am a Taiwanese myself, and I do value historical reconciliation and also Wikipedia's development.

I can be contacted at han-teng.liao [at] oii.ox.ac.uk I am looking forward to your response.

Fix for external search engines

The current code for external search engines is not working. I've fixed it (you can check it in my monobook.js) and I'll need help from an admin to install it :) Guillaumito 2008年6月10日 (火) 07:36 (UTC)

Could you indicate to which situation does your fix apply? At least in my environment (Safari, Firefox for Mac OS X) the external search links in e.g. this page do work. Also I would appreciate if you could provide the points for your fixes:
  • "searchInput" -> "poweredSearchText". In the above page "poweredSearchText" fields is located far below from the external search buttons. Using "searchText" field might be better, IMHO.
  • adding Wikiwix: some might consider having too many engines to be a clutter. I would like to see at least one more person to support this addition.
You can just drop a note in MediaWiki‐ノート:Common.js in English about these. I can help you about translation there.

First of all, sorry for not speaking japanese. i'd like to, but I still can't do it. I'm passing by just to say Brazil is celebrating the Centenary of the Japanese Immigration. We are happy to have such lovable people in our country who contribute to it and treat us so nice. Brazilian people, Japanese and descendents are celebrating the Centenary until July 18th. We are also honored with the presence of your majesty prince Naruhito in our country. Wikipédia-pt is also preparing itself to celebrate the Centenary. I think that would be grateful if Wikipedia in Japanese could celebrate with us this great date. Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia

Hello Japan, I have create a new page Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia for your japanese Wikipedia.

Hi, thank you for your contribution! Sadly, I had to delete the page because it did not explicitly state the inheritance from original English description page. Besides, the link to supposed script output is invalid as of this writing. Please consider making it functional before submitting the page again. Finally, I (plus other admins) would greatly appreciate if you could form a consensus (preferably with five or more) before you create such a new wikiproject.
Hello, sorry for the not existing page. Now erveryday you can get this page page. But why you delete the project page. No other languages (en, de, sv, ru, ...) do this. I think this was a bad step. Ok, I can´t japanese. But how can I start this project. I think I program this page and some Wikipedian from Japan can work with this page. If the title is not ok, please give me a better title for this japanese project page.
As I wrote above, the reason of deletion is simply because of the lack of inheritance of edit history from the original project in English wikipedia, which is regarded as a violation to GFDL terms (Japanese wikipedia is rather strict about the necessity of history inheritance when you translate/transwiki something). Besides, a wiki project is something organized by multiple people, rather than a effort by a single person. I think you can try to convince others by putting your script output in a subpage of your user page and show it off to others at Wikipedia:井戸端. You should be able to get help there about the name of the project too.
Oje! This page was not a translated page from en. There is no violation of GFDL. I have wrote a script in perl. This script can scan the articles of a dump (for example from jawiki) and make an output. This output is at the moment in all languages the same - in english. So this project page is not a translation. It is from my script created only for the jawiki and include only the errors from jawiki. I have an international discussion page under de:Benutzer:Stefan_Kühn/Check_Wikipedia. And there you can download the perl script under GFDL - Download!
Well, in my understanding, once you publish a text under GFDL license, you have to refer to it when you reproduce it elsewhere no matter which method you use. Even if you customize your script for Japanese Wikipedia, the project description part remain identical to the one in the English version, which needs history inheritance.

(return indent) I think all the text in the page is written by sk because he said "I program this page". Is it right? If so, I think there is no problem about GFDL. And maybe it's better that the page should not be named with "WikiProject" because a WikiProject needs some members; not "Wikipedia:WikiProject Check Wikipedia" but "Wikipedia:Check Wikipedia" (Maybe there's a better Japanese name). I think it's a very useful tool. Thank you for your programming!

Thanks! Widehawk. Yes I wrote this program also this text inside the output. I think WikiProject is the right name because after a short time there are in every languages a small team of Wikipedian who work with this list. At the moment, ok, I am the first member of this team. :-) So where I can write this page?
As I wrote above, a good start is a subpage to your user page (then nobody will complain about the title). Then you can let others know here or Wikipedia:井戸端. Please also keep in mind to include a reference to original English project in edit summary when you create the page, otherwise somebody is going to complain about GFDL! (what you are going to do is to reproduce a text formerly published under GFDL somewhere else, in that case you need a reference to the original. It doesn't matter whether you are the original author or not, nor the method of doing so.)
Sorry, Makotoy. I restored Stefan's page temporarily. Because I think Stefan's claim is fair enough. As far as I know, GFDL doesn't demand to the original author to open his original texts to the public under the same GFDL. The original author can open his text to the public under any licenses which include a new GFDL. I think it has no problem that Stefan contributes his original text to also the Japanese Wikipedia under a new GFDL even if it has already been used at other language Wikipedias. No, I don't oppose to move his page into his subpage. But I think it is unfair that Makotoy have deleted his page by reason of GFDL violation. Moreover, we must apply not a speedy deletion but a vote for deletion for GFDL violations. I think this Makotoy's speedy deletion is obviously abuse of adminship. Perhaps we should have the deletion discussion at least once for Stefan's page.
In that case, I am OK about the page being restored. Sorry for the confusion to everyone, in particular to Stefan. There is no dispute about him being the original and sole author of description section, although this treatment seems to be a bit of deviation from the current Japanese Wikipedia policy about translation from elsewhere. Still, I would like to see the page under a better title, hopefully in Japanese for a better representation of the purpose of the page.

Thanks to all! I have copy the current version of the page.

Would you move your page to your subpage or rename more suitable name, Stefan Kühn? I don't think your page is the GFDL violation. However, in Japanese Wikipedia, it is not welcomed that only one person creates a new WikiProject page on his own judgment even if it is useful. You should put the page in your subpage until you find some collaborators and translate your page into proper Japanese language. I could help your perl script translation if you move your page.
Anyway, it's inconvenient that anyone except Stefan can't edit the page. How about separating output of the program from the project page as "/output" page? Then everyone can edit the project page to translate descriptions or to sign as a project member. The output page can be shown in the project page like Template, using {{/output}}.
At the weekend I will work at the translation of the project page. I will create a page inside wikipedia where you can insert the japanese text and my script download this text and create with this text every morning a new output for all project languages (de, ja, no, en, ...). If you have a problem with the title of the page or the namespace, I have no problem if you move this project, but please don't delete this page. :-) But in all other languages there are not so big problems like in the japanese Wikipedia. I am happy that you see the worth of this project.

Exchange of Ideas (from Japanese Wikipedia to Tagalog Wikipedia and Kapampangan Wikipedia)

Ciao! I am from the Philippines, and I am an active article contributor of Tagalog and Kapampangan Wikipedia. Recently, I'v been trying to create articles about Japan (straight from here at Japanese Wikipedia), especially about Japan's geography and some ideas about the Japanese language. However, I am still not familiarised with some Kanji (or Hanja?) characters. I am still looking for someone here who is able to speak Tagalog and/or Kapampangan to help me in creating articles in two Wikis about Japan and other related stuff. Thanks. --Lee Heon Jin 2008年10月27日 22:21 (GMT +0800)

Please translate and repost as appropriate.

The licensing update proposal to dual license all Wikimedia Foundation wikis under both the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) and the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License (CC-BY-SA) is moving into its final phase. This proposal has been put forward by the Foundation and made possible by recent changes in the GFDL. Adopting the new licensing scheme is contingent on community approval.
