ere sawed outof the crossing tracks, south of SutterStreet, and afterwards inserted between the : two Sutter Street tracks. It was the plan of the company to reduce the gage of theSutter Street road to standard gage at night, by shifting therails at once. With this object in view, the new angle-ironchairs had an inner row of bolt holes, i^ ins. inside theothers, to which the rail bolts were to be be fitted. The pave-ment blocks were also placed in position alongside the railstemporarily at first, so that they could be easily removed wheri ELECTRIC RAILWAY IN THE SERN VALLEY One of the results of the exploitation of the rich water pow-ers in the Alps has been to encourage the building of electricrailways between towns whose small population could notafford this convenience if the cost of power were high. Thelatest of these lines has just been opened for service in theSerntal or Sern Valley, of the Upper Rhine district. Thisrailway is of the standard direct-current type, is 13.9 km long
